Weekly Wins: Things to Do in DC May 9 – 15
We’re heading into the second week of May, and week 2 of our month-long effort to bring you cool content that helps you explore the city like a DC tourist. Local events with international flair are a focal point around the DMV this week and we’ve got all the info you need to live the #FrayLife all each and every day.
Here’s what we’ve got marked on our calendar this week:
Wednesday, May 9
– Love good Belgian beer? Check out the Allagash Coolship Bash at the Sovereign. Many of Belgium’s legendary beers get their flavors from being chilled in coolships, or large, open metal vessels that are used in the fermentation process. A tasting at Allagash includes three beers from the Maine brewery’s coolship, including Coolship Red, Saison Gratis and the brand-new Belfius, a blend of oak-aged coolship beer and house saison.
Thursday, May 10
– Explore the National Gallery of Art after hours with Evenings at the Edge! Accompanied by Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play, New York–based Elisa Monte Dance Company will perform throughout the Gallery’s East Building alongside dancers from DC’s own Joy of Motion.
– First rule about the fight club of the art scene: don’t talk about the fight club of the art scene. We’ll make an exception here. Make your way to Union Market’s Dock 5 to see a mural creation like no other: Secret Walls. Local artists from POW! WOW! DC will race against the clock to fill a canvas with black and white colors. The winner is chosen by YOU!
Friday, May 11
– Time to bring back an old-school favorite. Bring your schmorgesborg of movie theatre treats and kick back in the comfort of your own car while viewing a classic film. The Union Market Drive-In is featuring Raiders of the Lost Ark on the night of the 11th. If you don’t own a car, no worries! Walk-up customers can set up camp in the Suburbia Beer Garden or on the sidewalk.
Saturday, May 12
– The European Union Open House allows Embassies of 28 EU Member States to the US to open their doors to the public for a rare inside look at America’s cultural heritage and national traditions.
– Lose yourself in the “Spirit of Funk” at this one-of-a-kind day fair, parade, and music festival. With over 100 musical acts and plenty of activities, the Funk Parade is set to go all day and all night.
– The 80s are back for one night only at the Hirshhorn Museum’s Spring Gala. If you’re a fan of Madonna, MTV, and everything 80s, don’t miss out on this dinner party that celebrates the iconic decade.
– Bardo Brewing in Southeast is gearing up for a wild night. This silent disco beer garden party comes equipped with multiple DJs, hundreds of partiers, and a bunch of glow in the dark gear. This outdoor party is worth checking out.
– Tacos, beer, and tequila. Need we say more? Come by The Yards to experience DC’s premier taco, beer, and tequila festival. This event is stacked with 20+ food trucks, beer from 25 craft breweries, and 8 margarita bars. Reserve your spot today because tickets are going fast!
Sunday, May 13
– Do something special with your mother this Mother’s Day with a Mother’s day Paint & Sip, a unique paint, sip, and shopping experience. Mimosas will be served and a special surprise will be gifted to all of the Moms.
Monday, May 14
– One of the music industries most popular artists, Bon Jovi, makes their way to Capital One Arena. Tickets are for sale for as low as $20.
Tuesday, May 15
– Adams Morgan movie nights are returning for their fifth season! Bring a group of friends to Marie Reed School and enjoy a tremendous lineup of films, both new and old, and other fun activities.
– Join the Friends of Brookside Gardens and The National Philharmonic for a night of sophistication. Trio on the Terrace is a sunset garden party featuring the National Philharmonic Chamber Players led by concertmaster Colin Sorgi. Take in the gorgeous setting filled with flowers and gather on the terrace for a classical music performance inspired by the spring season.
