How did capital couple get started? Both for you two as a real couple, and then the IG account following that?

Real Couple:

Just as with any fairy tale romance, our story began… in Criminal Law class!  On the first day of class in January 2014, Ethan’s eyes fell upon a new student – a beautiful “blond-haired, blue-eyed bombshell” across the classroom between several of his law school friends.  Ethan was the commissioner of a fantasy football league with a handful of his law school friends, and they had a group chat where they would ignore lectures and instead talk about fantasy football, the latest gossip, and anything other than law school.

On this day, Ethan had a better topic: “Who’s the new girl? I call dibs!” (so classy, we know…) Luckily, Taylor knew several of Ethan’s friends, and she accompanied them the following weekend to Blackfinn.  A mutual friend introduced us, and Ethan acted like he’d never noticed Taylor before: “Oh, who’s this gorgeous girl?” However, Taylor was not fooled, as she had actually seen the “dibs” chat on her friend’s computer (and noticed Ethan staring at her the entire class).  Taylor considered calling him out, but she was charmed so she played it cool. Sparks instantly flew between us, and the rest is history! Moral of the story: Respect the dibs!

Capital Couple:

Over the last few years, we’ve hosted visiting friends and family on an almost monthly basis.  Our visitors would typically come into town for a long weekend, and we couldn’t miss school and/or work to entertain them all day, every day.  When our visitors had to explore D.C. without us on weekdays, we began creating detailed “D.C. Guides” listing the best activities, restaurants, and bars in each DC neighborhood along instructions on how to get around via metro, car, or on foot for our visitors to rely on to ensure they saw the best of DC. Pretty soon, coworkers and clients were asking for the guides for their visiting friends and family. After receiving so much positive feedback on our guides, we decided it was time to start sharing them with a wider audience!

What kinds of content do you regularly share with your IG followers and on the blog?

After years of frequenting many of the same bars and restaurants with little variance, D.C. began to feel stale.  But that’s not D.C. at all! One of our favorite parts of creating content for our blog has become the necessity to constantly push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and explore new and exciting neighborhoods and attractions to share with our followers.  Not only does this keep our content fresh, but our relationship as well!

Where did the idea for seasonal bucket lists come from? How do you decided what to put on the bucket lists?

We love that D.C. truly has all four seasons and that the city is so much fun to explore, regardless of the weather! DC has a wide variety of activities, rain or shine, humidity or snow.   Instead of forcing visitors to bare the elements for a miserable tourist-filled day, we use our Bucket Lists to point to local favorites for Winter snow days, Spring rain showers, Summer heat waves, and Fall football weekends!

Plus, the hottest bars, restaurants, and attractions in DC are constantly in flux, so we also like to shine a spotlight on a couple of D.C.’s newest attractions each season.

What are a few of your go-to things to do in DC?

When we really want to impress our visitors, we have a handful of “go-to” activities. After a night out at the bars, we love to take guests to the Lincoln Memorial at night, even when it’s freezing cold out! There’s just nothing that tops walking along the Reflection Pool and up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial by moonlight. We love Sunday Funday in Georgetown, starting with Kafe Leopold for brunch, followed by shopping up and down M Street, and finishing off the afternoon with blueberry mojitos at Sequoia on the Georgetown waterfront.   The perfect weekend activity is discovering new DC restaurants and vendors at Eastern or Union markets. We love grabbing a coffee, petting all of the dogs, trying at least three different types of food, and supporting DC businesses all while getting some fresh air and vitamin D.

What is something unusual that most people don’t know about you?

Ethan grew up on Meredith Valley Farm, his family’s gorgeous farm in a small town in the mountains of Tennessee. Meredith Valley Farm has become a popular venue for weddings, family reunions, and fishing trips. Taylor was a member of the Clemson Rally Cats dance team in college, where she was on ESPN several times and met Erin Andrews! Nowadays, she teaches adults advanced hip hop here in DC.

How do you manage your time as lawyers while also exploring the area and posting about it so often?

The legal profession is notoriously demanding, and our jobs as attorneys fit the stereotype.  Regardless, we love our jobs and are really proud of the positive impact we create on a daily basis.  While we always prioritize our careers, we love exploring D.C. and sharing our adventures with our followers.  That’s why we rely on lots of coffee and little sleep! (Kidding… sort of.) At the end of the day, balancing our careers and our blog takes a lot of work, but we cherish every second.  It’s easy doing something you love with someone you love.

(NOTE FROM ETHAN: Taylor may be modest about it, but 90% of Capital Couple’s success is due solely to her.  Her ambition and drive are second to none – I don’t know how she does it!)
