6 Spots to Ski & Be back for Dinner
The Winter Olympics are right around the corner, but don’t just sit around waiting to watch the pros do their thing. Get out and experience the thrill of winter sports for yourself.
Hitting the slopes is the obvious choice, but it can be tough to get friends to commit to an out of town ski trip even on the weekends.
Luckily, DC is just a few hours away from some of the region’s top winter resorts, which makes it’s easy to hop in the car and head to the mountains for the day without much prior planning.
We won’t get into the debate of whether skiing or snowboarding is the superior sport (*cough* skiing), but grab whichever gear you prefer, stock your Sixer Winter Jacket (assuming you have a DD), and check out these 6 ski resorts you can shred at all day and still make it home in time for dinner:
1. Liberty Mountain (2 hour commute)
Liberty’s website, rightfully, reads, “you won’t believe a resort with this much to offer is so close to home!” You’ll find skiing, snowboarding, tubing, ice skating (among other activities), and Liberty’s snow system guarantees a snowy mountain all winter long.
#FrayLife Tip: Liberty is a partner of inside Ski in Leesburg, VA, which offers year- round indoor ski instruction. Hit it up to learn from Liberty instructors before hitting the mountain.
2. Massanutten Resort (3 hour commute)
It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned snowboarder or are putting on a pair of skis for the first time, Massanutten Resort has plenty of room for all skill levels on its 6000 acre mountain located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Mark your calendars for Snow Moon Fest (March 2-3, 2019), where there will be a polar plunge, live music, a parade, and tap takeovers!
#FrayLife Tip: Massanutten also has an indoor waterpark that’s open year-round for those of you whose idea of winter fun is staying inside as much as possible.
3. Roundtop Mountain (2.5 hour commute)
Roundtop is just 75 miles north of Baltimore in Lewisberry, PA, and its proximity to I-83 means it’s just a few stress-free hours of travel away. Its location makes it ideal for a day trip and its offerings make for an awesome time. With 21 trails, 2 terrain parks, and 9 lifts, you’re sure to maximize your time on the mountain at Roundtop.
#FrayLife Tip: Check out Roundtop’s live webcams to get a glimpse of the mountain before making the trip.
4. Timberline Four Seasons Resort (3.5 hour commute)
If you’re looking for a diverse set of slopes, look no further than Timberline Four Seasons Resort in Davis, WV. Timberline has some of the region’s most consistent natural snowfall, so you get a true snow country experience on each of the 40 different trails. A trip to Timberline gives you the chance to ski “the south’s longest run,” the Salamander– a 2+ mile downhill stretch.
#FrayLife Tip: If you’re up for more than a day trip, Timberline’s County Roads Weekend Pass lets you hit the slopes from Friday – Sunday for just $139.
5. Wisp (3.5 hour commute)
Overlooking Deep Creek Lake, Wisp is one of the most well-known ski resorts in the mid-Atlantic for a reason. Wisp boasts 172 acres of terrain and plenty of activities to occupy them. In addition to skiing, snowboarding and tubing, Wisp also offers a mountain coaster, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and more.
6. Whitetail Resort (2 hour commute)
Whitetail Resort is just over an hour and a half away from DC and is super accessible from I-70, so there’s no reason not to plan a day trip. If the close location isn’t enough to lure you out of the city, Whitetail’s 23 trails and two terrain parks hopefully will. And for all you beginners out there, you can take ski or snowboard lessons every Thursday at Whitetail.
