Weekly Wins: Things to Do in DC 8/29 – 9/4

 

 

The last few days of August are this week, but so is Labor Day Weekend.

There are many Labor Day events going on in the DC area, which means this week is packed with some awesome weekly wins.

From baseball to a silent disco, end of summer parties, concerts, bar crawl, and arts and crafts, there is plenty to keep you distracted from the fact we are quickly approaching fall. Make the most of your Labor Day week with our weekly wins!

Wednesday, August 29

Get the pick me up cup of coffee you need at Philz Coffee in Dupont Circle. The shop will be hosting a soft opening party from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. to celebrate their grand opening. Complimentary coffee and snacks will be served. You can RSVP here, however, the event is free and you don’t need to show your ticket at the door.

There is no better way to get over that Wednesday hump than with an awesome workout. Head to Canal Park at 7 p.m. for a free outdoor barre3 class. Don’t forget your yoga mat, a water bottle, and sunscreen! Register for the event here, and make sure to show up. No shows forfeit any future barre3 class reservations.

Thursday, August 30

If you’re a gal and need a new headshot for your LinkedIn page, headshots and happy hour will give you a new headshot and a drink! This event will be held at Mindspace, a co-working space downtown. The event is hosted by the United Women in Business Foundation, and will begin at 7 p.m. Food will be provided by Nobu, in addition to wine tastings from City Winery.

If you are a creative person and love to write, or want to learn more about creative writing, the Community Building Art Works will hold a creative workshop at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria. The workshop is from 6:30 – 9 p.m. and will focus on the craft of writing and how it enables us to introspect, communicate and connect. Bring your own pen and notebook, light refreshments will be served. This event is free, but a small donation is appreciated!

Popular Oakland, California native rapper G-Eazy will take his Endless Summer tour to Northern Virginia Thursday night. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Jiffy Lube Live. Other popular rappers and producers like Lil Uzi Vert, Ty Dolla $ign, YBN Nahmir, P-Lo, and Murda Beatz will also make an appearance. The lowest priced tickets currently are going for $20.

Friday, August 31

Bring out your best dance moves Friday night with a rooftop silent disco. This fun event will be held at The Embassy Row Hotel from 8 to 11 p.m. Electronic dance beats, disco groove, and throwback tunes, and a top 40 mix will be the music you get to jam out to. Tickets are $16 a person, but if you have a group of five or more, it’s only $10 a person!

While it’s sad, it’s true. Summer is coming to an end. No reason you shouldn’t go out with a bang though, especially on Labor Day weekend! Celebrate the end of an awesome summer at the Living Room DC from 10 p.m. – 3 a.m. You will enjoy an hour of free cocktails, drink specials all night long, networking, dancing, and the best part – midnight pizza! Feel free to bring school supplies to donate, they will be given to DCPS classrooms.

Saturday, September 1

Who doesn’t love a good DC bar crawl? Don’t miss out on the Labor Day bar crawl happening at some of the best bars in Dupont Circle. There will be many drink specials and of course a fun time. Tickets are $14.99 with the promo price online but get yours right away because they sell out fast. Registration for the crawl is at Sign of the Whale from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Whenever we hear there’s a “Really Big Tequila Party,” we can’t help but assume there is a good time to be had. Saturday night at Big Chief, the finale of summer will be celebrated from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. This event includes awesome music, tequila tastings, and fun surprises! Admission is free, but make sure to register online.

Cheer on the Nationals as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers at 6:05 p.m. The Nationals and Brewers will face off all Labor Day weekend long, providing solid Labor Day entertainment. Don’t forget the fun also happens three hours before the game at The Bull Pen, where you can enjoy drinks, appetizers, and good company!

Sunday, September 2

You don’t want to miss out on one of the most popular Labor Day Weekend events, the National Symphony Orchestra Concert. The concert will be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.  Gates open at 3 p.m., and admission is free!

The black and red will face off against Atlanta United at the brand new Audi Field, Sunday at 6:30 p.m. If you haven’t had the chance to check out the new stadium yet, this is the perfect weekend to do so. The fan experience goes beyond just inside the stadium, with the fan plaza outside, rooftop patio with beautiful DC views, and a rooftop bar!

Monday, September 3

This year’s Labor Day DC Blues Festival Festival will take place 2 to 7 p.m. at Wunder Garten. Memphis Gold and special guest Charlie Sayles will perform at the festival. Rogue Johnsen Band, Fast Eddie and the Slowpokes, and Patty Reese Band will also perform. Food trucks will be on site and craft beer will be served!

Explore the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood on the Politics and Pints Capitol Hill Walking Tour. During the two hour tour, you will learn about the riveting history of the Washington government and see iconic landmarks. You will finish off the tour with a drink in Washington’s oldest commercial district. Tickets are $15.

Tuesday, September 4

The National Geographic Society will host a discussion on the future of the Amazon Rainforest from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The discussion will include Thomas Lovejoy, U.N. Foundation and National Geographic Fellow and Brazilian researcher Rita Mesquita. A screening of the NatGeo WILD documentary “Wild Amazon: Savage Realm” will be shown following the discussion. Amazon snacks and juices will be served.

If you love being artistic or learning new skills, join Linny from the Lemon Collective at The Alcove for an embroidery basics workshop. During the workshop, you will learn four stitches that will up your embroidery game. All experience is welcome! Tickets are $30 and the workshop begins at 5:30 p.m.
