Weekly Wins: Things to Do in DC 10/31 – 11/6

 

 

What we have all been waiting for is here…HALLOWEEN. There is no shortage of Halloween parties this week in The District.

If Halloween being in the middle of the week gets in your way of celebrating, have no fear. A lot of the fun will continue into Thursday and the weekend.

Other wins for this week include a local art fair, cocktail class, holiday cooking class, yoga, couples’ pottery painting, and Harry Potter trivia!

Wednesday, October 31

If you think spooky comedy can’t be such a thing, you thought wrong. The 4th annual HA!lloween will take place at The Bier Baron Tavern and Comedy Loft at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature an amazing lineup of local comics, a costume contest, killer jokes, and other spooky fun. The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $13 cash at the door.

“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.” That’s a statement we’ll stand by behind on Halloween. You do not want to miss the Wizard Fest: Halloween Party at Union Stage. This event will feature a costume contest, cash prizes, goodie bags for the best dressed, a live DJ and dance party, drink specials, and quidditch pong! Harry Potter themed drinks will be served including butterbeer and other potent concoctions. General admission tickets are $25, and the event starts at 8 p.m.

Head to Grand Central in Adams Morgan for our very own Halloween Beer Olympics. Teams of 5-6 will participate in various drinking games to win the first place title. Get creative with your team and dress up in your best costumes for a chance to win the costume contest. Tickets are $20.

Thursday, November 1

Celebrate Halloween Cuban style with themed food, drinks, and spooky decor. Customers are encouraged to dress up! Happy hour will go on all night long and feature $6 cocktails, $2 empanadas, and $2 mini rum cake shots.  Happy hour begins at 4 p.m.

Why not keep the Halloween partying going with a Halloween Masquerade event Thursday night at SAX Restaurant and Lounge? Don’t worry about getting a mask, they will be provided at the venue. The dress code is “sexy and fresh.” The event will feature a variety of music from awesome DJ’s. Tickets are $15 and doors open at 10 p.m.

Maggiano’s in McLean, Virginia will host a Halloween Murder Mystery dinner from 7 to 10 p.m. The dinner will include a 2-hour beer and wine open bar, cash liquor bar, and a 3 full course family style menu. Tickets are $75. There are only 14 spots left, so secure your spot now!

Friday, November 2

This local art fair will not only be going on Friday but all weekend long! More than 300 visual artists from the DC area and outside of it, will show off their artwork throughout 74 booths at Union Market. On Friday, there will be a young collector’s ice cream social. There will also be a panel discussion led by local DC art collecting enthusiast Philippa Hughes, on how to purchase beautiful art without spending a crazy amount of money. From panel discussions to art movie nights, and fun events, this art fair is one of a kind. A Thursday/Friday pass is $12.

If the combination of history and food is intriguing to you, then consider attending the fourth annual Smithsonian Food History Weekend. This is a roundtable event that brings historians, writers, food entrepreneurs, activists, and practitioners together, to talk about regional foodways in America. You will learn about traditional foodways and up and coming aspects to regional cuisines. The event is free, but you can register and see a full schedule of the roundtables here.

Start off your Friday morning with a beautiful walking tour of the Memorial Arboretum. The 300 plus trees at Arlington National Cemetery are filled with bright colors right now, so it’s the perfect time to go! On the tour, you will learn more about the arboretum and the urban forestry program, vast tree collection, and state champion trees. The walk is from 9 to 11 a.m. and is free.

Saturday, November 3

Looking for a fun event for you and your significant other to do this weekend? Paint Your Own Pottery Studio’s verses & vows pottery painting event is just for you! This couples event will begin at 5:15 p.m. Tickets are $38, and include refreshments, the choice of one pottery piece per person, paint materials, and one entry for a free date night gift. The studio is located in Fairfax, Virginia.

We have another couples’ event for you to enjoy this weekend, this one on the active side. Yoga With Bae is a class designed by Shay Hampton, Founder of Pretty Yoga, for women to bring their man along with them to enjoy the benefits from yoga. During the class, you will learn how to meditate together, unite forces through vinyasa flows, and find balance through partner yoga poses. The event is free, and begins at 12 p.m. at The Loft at LuluLemon.

Did someone say beer? We thought so. Don’t miss the DC Beer Festival on Saturday at Nationals Park. Dozens of craft breweries will be there, as well as lawn games, many food trucks, and DJ’s. Your $45 admission ticket includes unlimited tastings. Food is sold separately. The event will take place in the stadium’s concourse and is from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sunday, November 4

This is a DC tour just for her. TOHO (A Tour of Her Own), will host a one-day event of historical tours and wellness training specifically focused on women’s influence on history and culture. The tour will feature yoga on the mall, a self-defense course, and sessions where you will learn about women’s influence on legislation, politics, espionage, the presidency, commerce, and architecture. An all access pass is $80. The first session begins at 9 a.m.

Get the alcohol and yoga flow going at a yoga and mimosa brunch Sunday morning, at The Watergate Hotel. You will take a 60 minute vinyasa flow yoga class, followed by a buffet brunch with unlimited mimosas. Tickets are $55.

Halloween is over, but the holiday season is just around the corner. Start prepping your cooking skills with Chef Amy Brandwein during her holiday dish cooking class at 1 p.m. She will teach you how to cook tasty dishes like Zesty Cranberry Relish, Rosemary’s Sage stuffing, Joan and Amy’s Pappardelle Kugel, and Chef Amy’s Apple Pie. You will also get a family-style sampling of each dish. Tickets for the class are $55, and do not include beverages.

Monday, November 5

No one likes Mondays. Reward yourself after work with Monument Monday Happy Hour, at TechSpace in Arlington. You will get to enjoy drinks, snacks, and meet local business professionals. Superior wines by The Country Vintner will also be served at the event. The event is free, but you can register here.

eat.YOGA.drink. is a 3-in-1 event at Rhodeside Grill from 7 to 8:30 p.m. After finding your flow during a yoga class, you will enjoy delectable bites of American traditional cuisine. Tickets are $25 and include yoga, a drink ticket, and food samples. The yoga class is BYO mat.

If you find yourself in need of a good laugh after a long day at work, head to Tyson’s Biergarten in McLean, Virginia for a free comedy show. The show will feature up and coming comics from the DMV. Happy hour specials will be offered until 9 p.m. Register for the event here.

Tuesday, November 6

Want to learn how to become you and your friends’ personal bartender? Founder of TRUE Syrups and Garnishes, Tory Pratt, will teach a classic cocktail class from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Reserve – Clarendon. You will learn techniques such as garnishing, shaking and stirring, in addition to the history of cocktails and distilling. Most importantly, she will teach you exactly how to make your own fall-themed cocktails. Tickets are $30 and include three free cocktails.
