Weekly Wins: Things to Do in DC 4/18 – 4/24

April is in full swing and we’ve got plenty of activities to indulge in this week as tax day is in the rear view mirror!

From beer bashes to film festivals to potluck dinners with random people to an adult version of your favorite kid’s board game, there’s plenty going on in DC this week to pique everyone’s interest!

Here are the #FrayLife picks for what to do in DC this week:

Wednesday, April 18th

– Living the #FrayLife means getting out and being social (even on weeknights), so why not use your mealtime to make new friends and memories? The folks over at MealTribes have a cool, FREE solution that connects you with cool people for potluck dinners and great conversation. Sign up, connect with your new pals, cook your favorite dish (or cheat and buy one), and add some awesomeness to your Hump Day (or any) night.

– Calling all beer for breakfast lovers! Rustico restaurant is hosting a Breakfast Stout Bash! Choose from a variety of dark, strong, and other highly desirable draft beers from Michigan’s Founders Brewing. Be sure to try out the Kentucky and Canadian breakfast stouts both aged in bourbon barrels (Yes, bourbon barrels!).

Thursday, April 19

– Are you a film or theatre junkie on the look out for the latest films? We’ve got you covered! Beginning on April 19th, Filmfest DC, the city’s international film festival, will launch 80 independent and foreign films all across the city. Genres include comedies, dramas, thrillers, and documentaries so there’s a little bit for everyone! You can catch these films at Landmark E Street Cinema, AMC Mazza Gallerie, the National Gallery of Art’s east Building, and the Embassy of France.

– A double OT goal kept the season alive for the Caps earlier in the week and they’re back on the ice in Columbus on Thursday for Game 4.

Friday. April 20

– Kick off the weekend right with a rooftop, friends, and a free beer at the Farm Friday Happy Hour! The Farm on M St SE is inviting any and all to their rooftop bar to experience beautiful views, specialty cocktails, and more!

Saturday, April 21

– Silver Spring based fitness studio CYCLED! is taking things outdoor by bringing back their  popular LIVE DJ Rooftop Rides series. Your first chance to try this al fresco workout is Saturday, with DJ Just For Kicks (@iamjustforkicks). Available class times include 8 am (a 60 minute ride), 9AM10:15Am and 11:15Am (45 min rides each).

– Get your dance on at Dacha Beer Garden this weekend with Silent Disco- part of the weeklong Spingfest celebration at this Shaw hotspot! They’re giving away 50 free headsets for guests who dance the night away. The winner gets a free beer of their choice!

– Looking for a cool and sophisticated party for Saturday night? Head over to Anacostia’s Community Museum for their late-night Art After Dark experience! This event will feature live performances from hip hop/soul duo CrossRhodes and DJ Bobbito Garcia. Also be sure to explore the “A Right to the City” exhibition that delivers a truly unique insight into how Washingtonians have shaped the city’s neighborhoods we live in today.

– Patio and oyster seasons are here! Barley Mac restaurant is hosting its Second Annual Oyster Fest, so be sure to take advantage of their summertime favorites. If you’re into oyster eating contests, chilled white wine, beer, whiskey, and cocktails, then take advantage of this fun opportunity! This event sold out last year so make sure you buy a ticket before it’s too late.

– Planning a hike for this weekend? Check out National Park Week’s Fee Free Day! Yes, you can enter any park in the area FOR FREE throughout the day. Whether it’s a new trail or an oldie but goodie, DC’s national parks have something to offer for everyone!

– We are bringing back the adult version of your favorite childhood board games as Hungry Human Hippos (HHH) returns to the Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Teams of 4-6 will work together to collect the most “food” (balls) on the ice. Champions win $100 of DC Fray credit and gift bags for each player.

– After their win in overtime in Game 3, the Caps are guaranteed to be coming back to Capital One Arena on Saturday. Will the series be tied 2-2 like Ovie predicted, or will they be facing elimination? Either way you need to be rockin’ the red.

Sunday, April 22

– What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with a picnic! Beautiful Tudor Place is inviting patrons to its historic property for an afternoon picnic and plant sale. This free event is only available for one day only, so be sure to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to support local conservation. All you have to do is bring your own picnic and blanket!

Monday, April 23

– Start off your week by checking out the latest groundbreaking exhibition! Held at the National Building Museum, “Evicted” uses interviews, images, and statistics to detail the crisis of housing instability in America. This educational experience is definitely worth a look.

Tuesday, April 24

– If you want to take a break from your normal Tuesday night dinner, try out a cooking class! Via Umbria in Georgetown is hosting a pasta and dessert class for amateurs chefs. Chef Liam LaCitiva will demonstrate how to make pasta by hand and how to create a pairing sauce. This week’s menu features orecchiette with rapini, sausage and ceci beans followed by zeppole with lemon cream. Make sure you don’t miss out on this “appetizing” night out.
