Make your Black Friday Look a Little Brighter by Skipping the Crowds and Joining in on These Fun Non-Shopping Alternatives

Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year. This is known. But did you know there are many other activities to do in the DC-area on this day besides shop? Black Friday remains a day off of work for most, so take that time to do something fun, rather than cram into a crowded shopping mall or get trampled trying to get a new TV.

Attend a Washington Capitals Game

The Washington Capitals are defending Stanley Cup Champions and are back in action for their regular season. Work off that turkey by jumping around while cheering for the Caps as they take on the Detroit Red Wings. Puck drops at 4 PM, which gives you plenty of time in the morning to recover from than post-Thanksgiving food coma. Grab some friends, or family members (if you aren’t tired of them yet), and head to the Capital One Arena for some afternoon hockey.

Catch a Movie

What’s better after being constantly surrounded by family than a nice, quiet space to relax? The movie theater remains a place of solace for many after a packed Thanksgiving day. Plus, there are many high-profile films releasing the week of Thanksgiving. Are you a Rocky fan? Creed II drops the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, which gives you a chance to catch Michael B. Jordan’s character getting back in the ring again. Other notable titles releasing that day include Ralph Breaks The Internet and Robin Hood.

Visit a Museum

While many attractions are closed the day after Thanksgiving, all Smithsonian museums are open for business. It’s never a bad time to experience the city’s world renowned, and free, museums as something different after a day spent lounging around with family. There are tons of unique attractions in all museums, including IMAX films, that could keep you busy all day. Not to mention the vastness of these museums will be perfect for racking up steps after a day full of feasting on turkey. The museums available on the National Mall include the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, and the National Museum of Natural History, among many others.

Go to ICE! at the Gaylord National

The Gaylord’s annual ice sculpture attraction is back, and with a new theme this year of A Charlie Brown Christmas. ICE! will run from November 16th to January 1st, with ticket prices on Friday November 23rd starting at $44. This would be a perfect event for a date with a significant other after a family filled Thanksgiving, or just a cool activity with a group of friends, as this attraction is only available for about a month and a half. Head on over to National Harbor for this unique annual attraction.
