Shop (Local) ’til You Drop in the District this (Small Business) Saturday

 

 

#ShopSmall and make an impact on November 24 in support of Small Business Saturday, an annual event held in multiple cities around the country that gets everyone out supporting their favorite local businesses. You can buy from the big guys any day of the year, so use this day as an opportunity to show your appreciation for your local mom and pop shops that keep your community grounded in its roots.

Living in DC I’m sure you’re already well aware of the large presence of local businesses, but how often do you find yourself frequenting these places for all your year-round needs? Small Business Saturday is the perfect setting for you to switch up your normal shopping routine. (And you may even find yourself starting a new one!)

Any DC neighborhood would be a good one to visit, but try exploring one that’s typically off your radar to find new local spots you never knew existed. Here are just a few neighborhoods vibrant with local businesses waiting to gain your support, but a full list of all the unique DC areas can be found here.

A trendy store filled with home decor and various accessories, stop by Urban Dwell to find something that is sure to liven up your home. All the products are hand-picked and range from baby gifts to DC gifts and so much more.

The temperature is dropping and this ice cream joint is certainly keeping things cool with their fresh and local liquid nitrogen concoctions. One of four locations in the DMV, Nicecream will cater to all your ice cream needs no matter the weather at hand.

This location in particular is their most historic and roomy location with plenty of seating for you to sit down and fall in love with the product and the place!

Why should you have to choose between a coffee and a pastry? You shouldn’t. Head on over to the Buttercream Bakeshop for some freshly baked pastries to start your shopping spree off right, and grab some local coffee, courtesy of their neighbors Compass Coffee, while you’re there. It’s the best of both worlds!

Whether you’re looking for a good bite or a new read, Union Market is the right place to visit for all your interests. The market is home to Politics & Prose, an independent bookstore that’s sure to have a read you’ll love, as well as Salt & Sundry, a home and lifestyle boutique with products from makers both local and international, giving you a wide array of options to choose from.

Literally every neighborhood in DC has local businesses in its midst that are worth visiting, so get out and start exploring your neighborhoods!
