Metro Sports Leagues

7 v 7 Soccer League

Official Rules

Team Size:

Each team shall field no more than 7 players, including a goalie (at least 2 females for coed) at any one time.  MSL rules allow a team to play with 5 people (minimum 1 female for coed).  Anything less will be a forfeit.  There is no maximum limit to the number of females allowed on the field in coed games.

Time:

Play will be divided into (2) 25 min halves separated by a brief halftime.  There will be a running clock maintained by the referee.  Any delay tactics, (kicking the ball far out of bounds) will allow the referee (at his/her discretion) to stop the clock.

Games/Scoring:

Regular season games ending in a tie score will be recorded as tie games.  The playoffs will involve a shootout when the score is tied after regulation.  Both females will be required to kick in the best of 5 shootout.  If a team is playing with just one female she will kick twice.

Substitutions:

Substitutions may be made on your own throw in, any goal kick, or corner.  If the team with possession subs the opponent may sub as well.

Goal Box:

A goal box will be marked off in front of each goal.  It will extend approximately 10 paces/yards out and 5 paces/yards to each side of the goal posts.  The goalie may use his/her hands and take as many steps as he desires in this box.  There are also no restrictions as to how far the goalie kicks or throws the ball.

Offsides:

There is no off-sides.

Slide-tackling:

is not permitted in MSL. A tackle is deemed to be a slide-tackle at the referee’s discretion however, as a general guideline, a player is deemed to have committed a slide tackle if they leave their feet during the course of a tackle. Sliding to prevent a ball leaving the field is permitted so long as no opposing player is within playing distance of the ball.  Sliding is an indirect kick.  However a direct kick can be called if the player is tripped or if the player slides in the box and keeps the offensive player from a legitimate attempt at scoring a goal.  This is completely up to the referee’s discretion.

Field:

The field will be approx 60 yards long by 40 yards wide.  When using turf fields please note that games will be played in almost all conditions.

Roster:

  • A roster with a maximum of 15 players must be submitted prior to the third game.
  • Each team can bring a maximum of 3 non roster players to a regular season game.  These should be players that are invited to the game and not from a team that just finished.  A team is ALLOWED to use players that just played if the opposing captain approves.  But never more than 3 players.
  • Only players on the roster can be used for the playoffs.
  • Rosters can be randomly checked throughout the season.  Any team found in violation will have to forfeit that game.  If caught twice during a regular season a team will have to forfeit the remainder of the season with no refund.

Tie-Breakers:

  • Head to head
  • Goal Difference
  • Most Wins
  • Least Losses
  • Fewest Goals Allowed
  • Record vs other playoff teams
  • Coin Toss

Verbal Abuse:

MSL reserves the right to suspend or expel any player from the league who is found to be using racial and/or sexist slurs.  This is not acceptable behavior and it will not be tolerated.
