Your Month Ahead: April Things to Do

 

 

If you’re not looking for excuses to spend every possible second outside throwing back a few adult beverages this April, you’re in the wrong city.

But if you’re anything like us and can’t get enough of those things, you’re in luck because April flowers are bringing the Nats back to town, along with beer, wine, and food festivals, DC Filmfest, national recording acts, Brunchcon, the Georgetown French Market, and the “Largest Margarita Celebration in the History of the World,” plus a whole lot more.

Sunday, April 1

– Easter Sunday is also the first day of brunch season at Dacha Beer Garden! Doors open at 11am. Enjoy an amazing brunch menu, Easter Egg Hunt and contest for “Best Pastel Outfit.”

Wednesday, April 4

Daybreaker is back. This time your ultimate early morning yoga dance party takes place at The Resnick as part of the unveiling of its latest exhibit, No Spectators: the Art of Burning Man.

Get a new view of the cherry blossoms with the Petal Paddle kayak tour. Hit the water at The Wharf, then head out for three hours of peeping the petals around East Potomac Park.

Thursday, April 5

– The Nats start off the season in Atlanta on Wednesday, but they’re back in DC for their home opener against the Mets the very next day. Will you be there for the start of the season that will (hopefully) (finally) end with a World Series title?

Friday, April 6

– DC101 is taking over DC’s hottest new music venue when Blossom Bash comes to the Anthem. National acts Third Eye Blind and Bush will headline the show and tickets start at $55.

Saturday, April 7

Beer Yoga goes down at Wunder Garten. All-levels of yoga practice and beer drinking experience are welcome. Wunder Garten will provide the booze, you BYOM (bring your own mat).

– Now in its 10th year, International Pillow Fight Day is coming back to DC yet again. It starts at 3pm in a small park at the northwest corner of Independence Ave and 14th St SW, between 14th and 15th. Check out the Facebook group for more info.

– Brightest Young Things takes over the Air and Space Museum for BYT Presents 2001: A Space Party. This is an exclusive, tourist-free event in the most popular museum in the world, celebrating Yuri’s Night and the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s cinematic masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Sunday, April 8

National Champagne Brunch is a celebration of more than 500 prominent members of the LGBTQ community, including business leaders, elected and endorsed officials, and Victory Fund supporters from across the country. Enjoy big name speakers, great food and bottomless bubbles.

Monday, April 9

– No Kid Hungry is one of the premier nonprofits in the country. DC Taste the Nation is one of its biggest annual fundraisers and plays a key role in helping feed children across the country. Join the city’s finest chefs, sommeliers and mixologists for a night of great food for an even better cause.

Tuesday, April 10

– This year, the new Ben & Jerry’s District Wharf has teamed up with the Trust for the National Mall. All guests on Free Cone Day will get one complimentary scoop of a flavor of their choice. The event lasts from noon to 8pm.

– Don’t miss the last Nerds of NoMa event of the season. Spring has sprung in The District! That means it’s time to get outside and play, which is why the NoMa BID is bringing in leaders from DC’s booming and diverse recreation scene to talk shop. Learn more and get tickets.

Friday, April 13

Sip Savor & Stroll on the Arts Walk and see 20+ open artist studios, music, food and drinks, crafts, live performances and more. The event goes down from 5-8pm and is free to attend.

Saturday, April 14

 

– Hike and drink for a good cause at #FrayLife’s Trails and Ales Virginia Beer Hike. You trip includes a 4 mile hike, a stop at the Virginia Beer Museum, and brews from Farm Brewery at Broad Run!

– If you’d rather wine and dine in the city, don’t miss the spring edition of DC Wine Fest. It’s an all day party that celebrates spring, Rose, art, wine and music.

Sunday, April 15

– All good things must come to an end and the cherry blossoms are one of them. Before the trees go out of bloom, catch the Parade of Cherry Blossom Festival. Celebrity appearances, live music, food, and more.

– If you want one last chance to experience the cherry blossoms before the festival ends, check out the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival– the biggest Japanese street party in the nation.The festival starts as soon as the parade ends, and lasts until 6pm.

Monday, April 16

– Beat your Monday blues with FREE weekly bar bingo at Kingfisher (hosted by DC Fray). Play for free, enjoy drink specials and score sweet swag and other prizes. Learn more.

Tuesday, April 17

– Pay your taxes. Then why not try out 350 of the best whiskeys in the US (or at least as many as you can)? Don’t miss Whiskey Fest– the leading whisky festival in North America. Tickets include tastings, seminars by experts and food buffet.

Thursday, April 19

Filmfest DC is DC’s international film festival that showcases some of the best new films from around the world. Eighty films from 45 countries, to be exact. The 32nd annual festival takes place from April 19-29.

 

No Kings Collective and the Hirshhorn Museum are teaming up to celebrate art and commodity from the 1980s. The $19.89 exhibit features popup installations by No Kings Collective, a painting demo by SUPERWAXX, live music, drinks, snacks and more.

Saturday, April 21

National Park Week takes place from April 21-29. If you want to explore one of the national parks around DC, this is the perfect time since 4/21 is “Fee Free Day.”

The DC Craft Beer Festival at Nationals Park. Eighty breweries, dozens of seasonal brews, food trucks, lawn games, DJs and more. Grab your pretzel necklaces and get tickets for one of the two sessions.

– Over 100 artists will be on hand at the 6th Annual Arlington Festival of the Arts to showcase their works including glass, mixed media, paintings, jewelry, and pottery.

– Remember playing Hungry, Hungry Hippos when you were a kid? Hungry Human Hippos on Ice is like that, except wayyyyy better. Grab three of your best buds (or, hippo), and see if you can take home the top score.

Sunday, April 22

– Brunch is its own food group in DC, so it’s no surprise that the District is home to BrunchCon. This acclaimed festival celebrates all things brunch, and your ticket gets your food samples from 30 of DC’s best restaurants, plus open Mimosa and Bloody Mary bars.

– Make every Sunday #SundayFunday this spring with FREE bar bingo at O’Sullian’s. It goes down from 6-8pm, it’s free to play, and real prizes are on the line. Trivia is hard, but bingo is FUN.

Friday, April 27

SANE in the City is the annual fundraiser to benefit the DC Forensic Nurse Examiners. You don’t need to be a forensic nurse to attend, you just need to like live music, dancing, fun prizes, and a silent auction at the historic Hill Center in Capitol Hill. Tickets start at $55.

– Katt Williams has taken the stage and made people laugh all across the world. On 4/27, he brings his iconic comedy to DAR for his 11:11 RNS World Tour. VIP packages and general tickets still remain.

Saturday, April 28

– One of Georgetown’s signature annual events (and DC’s premier shopping weekend), the Georgetown French Market returns for the 15th time from 4/27 – 4/29. Georgetown’s Book Hill neighborhood will transform into an open-air market as over 40 locally-owned merchants, restaurants, salons and galleries display discounted items and unique finds.

– Want to wine and dine along the water? The National Harbor Food & Wine Festival takes place on April 28-29 and includes multiple sessions featuring tastings, cooking demonstrations, and educational seminars on culinary and wine trends.

– In a month loaded with outdoor festivals and drinking events, it’s only fitting to end with “The Largest Margarita Celebration in the History of the World.” The 6th Margarita March is DC’s official Cinco de Mayo kickoff party, and is your chance to sample 8 unique takes on Mexico’s classic cocktail.
