6 Podcasts to Make Your Commute Suck Less

Washington Post

Commuting sucks. Unless you’re one of the lucky few who can bike, walk or swim to work, you probably find yourself on the metro, on the beltway or in an UberPool every morning, wishing you were anywhere else.

You have to get to work somehow, so you may as find a way to have fun and make the most of your time while you do it.

Rather than listening to the same Top 40 hits for the 900th time and annoying your friends by lipsynching the words on Snapchat (seriously, stop), why not use your commute time to improve yourself as a person and professional?

Listening to podcasts is a great way to inform, entertain and motivate yourself, which makes them the perfect companion for your daily commute.

We assume you know about TED Talks, Serial, and This American Life, so here are some of our other favorites to get you started.

The Tim Ferriss Show

Dubbed “The Oprah Winfrey” of the internet, Tim Ferriss’ podcast impacts millions of people each month. Ferriss is a 9-5er turned Silicon Valley investor turned best-selling author turned human guinea pig, but on his podcast his job is to “deconstruct world-class performers” and divulge their tips, tools, routines and tricks for success. Topics range from business and productivity hacks to relationship advice and sex tips and episodes are long enough to keep you entertained for your entire commute, regardless of how many delays there are. Pro Tip: Listen to the Jamie Foxx interview first.

The Joe Rogan Experience

You may know him from Fear Factor. You may know him from the UFC. You may know him from stand up. But if you don’t know about his podcast, you don’t know the most entertaining Joe Rogan, yet. On this daily podcast, a who’s who list of guests join Rogan for longform conversations about a variety of topics, including pop culture, sports, and politics (to name a few). The guests are impressive, but Rogan’s unfiltered, unapologetic, often controversial, opinions of the world are what keep listeners coming back 5 days a week.

The Breakfast Club

No, this isn’t a throwback to the greatest 80s movie of all-time. This Breakfast Club gathers each morning to explore pop culture, current events and other timely topics through their comedic perspective. Movies, music, politics, love and relationships- you never know where the conversation is heading, but it’s always entertaining. Give it a download to see why the Breakfast Club crew is known for hosting one of the top morning shows in the country.

Young Entrepreneurial Lifestyle

Peter Voogd is a millennial entrepreneur on a mission to help his generation maximize its true potential. On YEL, Voogd shares his experiences and tips for living a world-class life in business and beyond. There are about as many business/entrepreneurship podcasts as there are bad drivers on the beltway, but Voogd’s stands out because his raw, real, actionable mentorship encourages mastery over motivational fluff. When you need a kick in the butt to help you crush your career or side hustle, these short episodes are a smart place to start.

Stuff You Missed In History Class

If you missed most of history class because you were tuning out your boring teacher, you’re not alone. It’s no fun memorizing names and dates that you’re never going to use again, but that doesn’t mean all of history is a snooze-fest. Need proof? Stuff You Missed in History Class is it. Just one or two listens to these compelling personal accounts and little known narratives about major events will leave you baffled by how interesting the past can really be.

AdultSh1t by BuzzFeed

This one is brand new (only a couple episodes in as of this writing), but it’s skyrocketing up the iTunes charts for good reason. Buzzfeed’s Kelsey Darragh and Kate Peterman give their unfiltered and hilarious take on things like diva cup maintenance and whether or not going home with a guy that has an Eminem 8 mile vibe is a good idea. If you can’t learn from the duo’s mistakes, at least you can laugh at them.

Airs: Once per week on varied days
